PPP - Planning my Personal Branding, Website, Portfolio and Presentation

Thinking of all the things that will need to develop and produce, not only for submission but professionally for the future, I wanted to review my idea and sort of set a plan of action moving forward.

Self  Branding - I have explored self branding a bit so far. I have identified that I want to develop a fairly minimal and uniform identity. I decided this after looking at and researching various designers websites and self branding, and in general I think a minimal approach is often the most effective; its clear and concise, easy to navigate and it gives more attention the the actual work, because if you have a very specific colour and style to your self branding, this might clash with the images of your work. A lot of the elements I produce will have my self branding applied to them, I want all these aspects to be really cohesive, and to have this identity applied simply and concisely.

Website - After fiddling for quite a while with a slightly more complex website template on Cargo Collective, I am going to pick a simpler one, and maybe try to research any resources which teach you how to do this.

Portfolio - My portfolio is in pretty good shape, however obviously a lot of the projects that I’m doing for extended practise will need to be added on, and also my self branding visual identity will need to be applied where applicable e.g. on the cover letter. I also had the idea that it would be nice to make a portfolio in publication form; I think sometimes it can be much more engaging to view something in a physical format, and perhaps mailing this into a studio that I am applying to would be a good way to capture their attention.

Presentation - For my presentation last year, as a reference to Milton Glaser’s ’10 things I have learnt’ design manifesto, I did ’10 things I have learnt; in second year’. While second year was a lot more focused on developing and learning, I think the focus on third year is obviously refining and creating our best work yet, as well as actually doing things and taking action in order to be in the best position possible when the time comes that we’re applying for jobs. For this reason I had the idea to do “10 things I have done; in third year’ - I think this would be great way to basically demonstrate what I have done, why I’ve done it, and how it has put me in better standing for the future.

Ultimately, I think to really succeed in this PPP module, is to have everything created and designed at your disposal ready to go. If I have my website, portfolio, physical portfolio and CV all refined and cohesive in my personal branding, that means that I will be able to apply for jobs and internships instantly.
