The Wall D&AD - Previous Winner Research

Last year there was a similar typographic d&ad brief were type had to be made/used to represent a community.

I really like this example on the website which is one of the projects that one:

Representing the world ‘Freegan’ community - People who believe in no waste and forage for items in order to minimise their consumption of resources. The typeface created is formed from the negative space of the Helvetica Bold characters, while I don’t think it looks too sophisticated, it does link very well to the idea.

What I think is very successful about this project is that its concise, consistent and integrated, the same simple design aesthetic is applied to each designed aspect of the project successfully .

Aspects like the billboard poster series are bold and engaging, and the idea of using stencils, and the re-usability of the poster is very well integrated within the rationale.

How can I apply these ideas to my project? - What this project is to me, is a simple idea, applied effectively and consistently, its success lies in how it consistently links back to the rationale of the brief. I do think the design is good, however it does sort of give me the impression that D&AD are more so looking for a great idea and application of that idea to visual design, rather then an aesthetically beautiful project. Looking at some of the other winners of this brief last year definitely confirms that as well.
