Voyage Magazine

For my second brief on my placement, I was tasked with redesigning a yachting magazine called ‘Voyage’.  Nixon Design, where I was working, had recently acquired the magazine, and where about to start the process of designing the new issue, and in doing so, update and refresh the design and editorial style. So I was given the master file for the previous issue and told to redesign that, in the hopes that some of my design decisions might influence their work on it.

Voyage is about Yachts, and that means the clientele of the magazine is probably fairly affluent. The editorial style needed to be slick and bespoke to match this, as a point of research I looked at ‘Classic’ Magazine, which is about classic Mercedes - Benz cars; this magazines design is very polished and sophisticated, the clientele probably shares similarities with of Voyage’s, if you consider the type of people who own classic Mercedes. The text is justified perfectly, images are full bleed on many pages, and lines that fall on the underlying grid system give order and structure to the layouts.

The pre-existing design of Voyage is rational and structured, and while well crafted, could be more intriguing. There are common and recurring layouts which are seen on multiple pages, such as and image filling a full page and spanning out to half of the next one, with a text box filling the remaining quarter.

Voyage has a selection of typefaces, layouts and colours that they use which form the magazines visual identity. In redesigning the magazine, I had to utilise the same typefaces and images, so that the brand and identity of the magazine was somewhat retained.
