Voyage - First Designs

These designs show some of the initial ideas I had for the editorial style. They’re more separate and don’t have a consistent editorial style because they’re more like experiments.

The image for the cover stayed the same but I changed the typeface of the title to Anisette which I thought was a bit more modern and attention grabbing. I utilised the negative space of the sea to place the type central in the page without overlapping the boat which is the primary focal point.

This spreads for the contents came about from the form of the image of the yacht, it leans to one side so I put a long image box going down at an angle to match how dynamic the image is. The circular text box resembles the circular windows you often see in boats, and the red background colour matches the pop of red in the ships sail. The proceeding page copies these shapes in a spot colour, just for a bit of visual intrigue and consistency.

This idea for the contents page is all about structure and rationality; I wanted to echo the structure and precision of the yachts themselves, they’re so well crafted that maybe an editorial spread with the same mentality and aesthetic would appeal top readers of the magazine.

The next few designs all experiment with the same spread about Rebecca. From large scale type to Swiss design inspired angles, I experimented greatly with how I could make the pages exciting, as I mentioned before, the angles work well because often the yachts in the images are at angles in very dynamic poses. I also wanted to maintain the idea of it being bespoke and well crafted.

These spreads use designs from nautical flags. I saw nautical flags on banners on one of the yachts in the magazine so I thought it might be a fun use of colour and shapes. Ultimately I think they distract and don’t give off the right high quality vibe that would appeal to the target audience.

For the G2 spreads , I tried some larger scale type, this custom one is very interesting however its the same story as the nautical flag idea, it just won’t appeal to the target audience as much in my opinion. I added in. The yellow because it was very bright and attention grabbing. This is when it occurred to me that I could give each different article different colours in order to separate them. Looking through the existing voyage issue, with consists colours and layouts, all the articles look the same, I realise the yachts are all different, but to someone who is not an avid yacht fan, all the images of them appear the same, therefore distinguishing the articles could be useful.

This design of the constance article ended up influencing a lot of the final design aesthetic, I really liked the negative space and the isolation of the text box, which was influenced by considering a birds eye view of a boat out on the open water which is also very isolated.

I had to use the typefaces that were already used by the magazine in order to retain some level of continuity, I ended up using ‘Sabon’ the most for display text because its serifed and suits the tone of voice and gives an air of elegance and sophistication.
