Hell Bay - Editorial Development

Based on the feedback from my supervisor, I started to create some new designs for the hell bay brochure. The idea we had talked through was to make it bolder and more contemporary, and also to apply this curved line from the logo as a visual device throughout the editorial and visual identity to maintain brand consistency.

Some of these initial designs work quite well, such as the 2nd spread;

 the uniform layout of the picture and text on the facing pages, mimicking each other is interesting to look at and the addition of the line at the bottom almost supports them. The addition of a dark blue colour to the visual identity also works well, as seen here were it creates contrast between the pages. The third spread goes along a similar idea, however using a pattern made of the line for one page. This pattern is a bit too overbearing and doesn’t fit in with the rest of the design that well.

The last spread fall a bit flat in my opinion. I think the reason for this in the type is too bold and loud. It could do with a higher leading to spread the text out and make it more readable.

I was getting a bit agitated with picking the right colours and applying this line correctly, so I went back to basics and just started doing it in black and white, really focusing on form and contrast, and how the two pages interact as a cohesive spread. The second spread here I think works really well, I love the contrast between the incredibly thick line winding down one page and a more reserved second page, with two offset text boxes and a lot of negative space.

Some pages needed more refining still though such as this spread;

 the random pattern with the line just does not look bespoke and refined at all, and the white bar on the left offsets the composition, so it doesn’t work as well as a double page spread. It was good to experiment with though. One experiment which did work a bit better was using the line as an ‘E’ in this typographic page.

 I’m still not sure whether it meets the right tone of voice for this brand, however it does make for an interesting spread.
