New Music Market Product Labels - Final Developments
After a group critique were I presented some final developed designs, I decided upon the final designs for my labels:
Caramel
After buying the shampoo bottle for the label, I changed the label’s proportions to fit the bottle. I then translated my design onto these dimensions.
My one concern was that the main title text ‘Caramel’ was possibly too small so played around with doing larger type, splitting the word into 2 and 3 rows. Ultimately decided that because the type is already quite decorative, these decreased the clarity and readability of the title, also it didn’t fit the style of a high quality product label which I was trying to achieve. I also tried a gold gradient to make the label appear shiny and more luxurious however it did not have that effect, so I decided the matt singular gold colour was a better way to go.
On His Own
I really liked the appearance and idea behind the candle inspired ovals on this design, so I just experimented with different colours. Inherently, the black label with white text seemed like the best way to go as the black background is more evocative of a dark room, and the white text on the black has a higher contrast, giving a higher level of legibility. I tried some blues just because I thought the colour would represent the album better, however my crit group agreed that the black label was the most effective. I changed the ratio of the label to fit a candle I bought and tried sticking a label on the candle. One of my concerns with the candle I purchased was that it was too small, and didn’t look enough like a luxury product, when I stuck the label one, which I printed as small as possible whilst still retaining a legible type size, the label was still too big, so from here I will purchase a larger candle which looks better quality so that I can put a larger label on.
Songs of Praise
After coming up with an appropriate design method and rationale behind it, my main design concern here was the legibility of the type; I liked the dull pink and yellow because it references the colours used in the punk subculture however because they don’t have a high contrast between them, the label was a little hard to read from a distance, and as a practical concern, since this is a product, it needs to be able to function and be legible on a shelf with someone looking at it from a few metres away. I did a version with a lighter pink, however this lighter, brighter hue of pink was not very evocative of punk, ultimately I went with black because it contrasted greatly, giving a higher level of readability, and also was evocative of punk as a genre, with a lot of punk imagery using black contrasted with a lighter colour in the foreground.
