New Music Market Posters - Initial Ideas

In response to the findings of my essay, that digital formats are becoming much more prominent in the consumption and advertisement of music, a lot of the touchpoints I produce for this project will be digital such as wireframe mockups and digital ads. However other than the products, there is one other thing I will physically produce which is posters. I will produce 4 posters, one for each product which is stylistically inspired by each corresponding album, and then also one poster to promote the New Music Market service as a brand.

With the final label designs established, it wasn’t hard to come up with some initial ideas for posters since the posters needed to share the same style and visual identity  as the labels. I created these initial ideas, and in some examples, such as the caramel posters, added in even more visual devices such as the Tadanoori Yokoo inspired psychedelic waves that I made as part of one of the visual maps of a song on Caramel.

Ultimately I made a set of posters I was happy with, however one concern was that when considering the NMM brand, they were not very evocative of it other than displaying the logo. Was there a line I could walk between correlating with the label designs but also retains some brand continuity and visual identity?

I tried some of the poster designs in the same blue used in the NMM branding, and they definitely were a lot more evocative of the NMM Visual identity, however they lost a lot of their individual style. I think with compositions like this with individual styles and influences, colour is very important and can really link the posters to their styles and to the label designs. From here, I think I need to consider the brand guidelines and visual identity of NMM a bit more, and then possibly create a set of posters which work better as a set, as I said, I think colour is important to distinguish the posters, so maybe I will experiment with a linear layout for all 3 posters.
