COP Design Project Ideas 2

Given the feedback I’ve received on my idea for the design project, and also having been more informed by some of the research I’ve done, I have come up with 2 ideas for a direction to take for my practical design project:

We no longer consume music in the sense that we don’t rely on purchasing cd’s or any other physical format in order to listen to music, we stream and download it because its free and instantly accessible. For the future of the album cover, this perhaps means it will become less relied upon and for musicians and artists, this means that they receive less money because they don’t get compensated from music downloads, how can these problems be solved, and how can this project prove that design is still important in the consumption of music?

  1. Music Products/Artefacts - If we no longer rely quite as heavily on the album cover as a visual signifier of the album, maybe we can replace it altogether. What if instead of an album cover, there was an object or product that represented the album? This idea is based on the concept of a service that you could buy music on and subsequently get sent an object/artefact/product which represents the album conceptually/symbolically/visually. This would encourage more people to buy music because in doing so they’re receiving something, perhaps even some sort of amenity they consume anyway. For this project, I would produce a visual identity for this service, as well as a range of objects which would be on the service.

  1. Digital Record Packaging - When reading ‘Cover Art By:’ for my research, I read an interview response where the designer talked about an album he bought digitally that came with extra digital material, almost replicating the record sleeve but in a digital format - “It came with an ‘interactive booklet’ consisting of extra photography, links to printable PDF posters on Matador’s website and full production credits. In itself it was poorly put together and took some messing around in iTunes to make it work. But I really think labels and companies like Apple should do more of this: include print-quality PDFs or jpegs with digital releases, additional material, videos etc.” - Thinking about how my project can be more applicable to how we consume music now, I quite like this idea and I think it would be interesting to explore how the intrigue and immersive ness of a physical record sleeve could be replicated in a digital format. How can the lack of tangibility be made up for? Could this digital package be so enticing that it actually convinces consumers to buy the album as opposed to stream it? Or will the ease and accessibility of music streaming be fully acknowledged and these digital packages will be accessible to anyone? If I did this as a project, I would be able to use Connan Mockasin’s ‘Caramel’ which is good because I’ve already heavily researched it. Perhaps I could make a physical record sleeve as well to contrast it, I think that comparison would be very interesting.
