PPP - Design Studio Research

Over the course of the year, I have compiled a list of studios based in London who’s work I admire, and that I would like to work at. Its more of an aspirational list, with studios such as Pentagram on there who clearly there’s not much chance they’ll hire me, however I thought it was a good start placing to aim high and see where it gets me. I think obviously its important to look on sites such as ‘If You Could’, linked in, the dots and the design jobs board, for studios who are actually looking to hire designers, however, I think a good first step is looking for studios who’s work I really like, because ultimately, these are the places that I would really enjoy working at.

Commission - I really love the work that Commission studio has done, and after pitching and winning the Rimowa project with them, I think it would definitely be worth emailing them. Having spoken to them and got feedback from them, I could email them and talk about that, and say that I’ve updated the rimowa brief with the feedback that they gave me, and hopefully they’d be interested in looking at it. I realise as a studio, they’re not that big, and after researching a bit, I did notice that they took on a junior designer about half a year ago, but never the less, I think it would be a good opportunity, and maybe I could apply for an internship. Also, when Commission were talking to us, they said what they look for in a good email when they get sent applications, so that would definitely put me in good standing.

Pentagram - Pentagram, largely considered to be the biggest design company in the world, has 4 studios - London, Berlin, New York and Austin. Because of this reputation, the high standard of their work and their caliber of clients, it would probably be exceptionally hard to get hired their right off the bat after uni. They don’t have a specific contact address for enquiring about jobs, so I would have to use the general London office email. With it being such a big studio, maybe I should try and come up with something that would make me stand out, such as this idea I had for doing some physical publications that feature my portfolio of work.

Builders Club - With previous clients such as Nike, Chanel, Adidas, Dior and Calvin Klein, London Based studio Builders Club specialise in art direction, advertisement and interactive/audio visual experiences. They have some really great work and are definitely a top studio, however personally for me, my only concern would be that they’re less of graphic design studio and have more of a focus on animation and motion graphics.

Made Thought - Made Thought have done some really great branding, editorial and visual identity projects, that are really in line with the projects I personally do. They also have a direct email that you can contact for applying for a job, and have put details on their website for what sort of applicant they’re looking for, which will definitely be useful because I can highlight these aspects in my email.

Bond & Coyne - I found this studio through looking on the payinterns.london site.  Bond and Coyne are more of an integrated creative agency, with focuses on advertising, marketing and design. This means there’s less purely design work in their portfolio, but some of the projects that they do have, look really cool.

Construct - Construct are another studio I found on payinterns.london, they have some really great branding projects, often within the fashion and luxury sectors.

Studio Moross - Studio Moross have a really bright and vibrant range of work, mostly in the cultural and music sector, such as branding and visual identity’s for music festivals or tours. They have a contact email for internships, which are fully paid, so that could be some great experience, if they’re not hiring.

Without - Without are a graphic design studio who focus on branding. A lot of their projects centre around the commercial sector, having created identities for luxury products and restaurants. They are currently accepting job applications for a junior designer, so this could be a good opportunity to apply after I’ve submitted my uni work.
