Out of Context - Initial Ideas

Considering the idea of context, and how effectively, context gives meaning or information to something, lead to considering this idea of ‘seeing the full picture’. At this exhibition for instance, there is a multitude of different work which had been produced under a variety of contexts. People viewing this work in the exhibition will interact with it by doing two things:

  • initially seeing the work, which will evoke/provoke thought and an inner response
  • Reading or being told the context of the work which then gives it meaning and they will understand more about it.

Considering a graphic and visual way to represent this, if seeing the full picture (both seeing the work and knowing the context) is represented by a full circle, seeing something without the context could be represented by a semi -circle.
