EOYS Branding - Design Development 2

Before submitting the designs for the branding live brief, I had time to make changes to my designs based on the feedback I got when pitching it.

One of the biggest things was changing the concept and idea of the campaign, encompassing in some small phrases and lines of copy that tie in with that concept and then applying that concept more towards the designs. The idea being that that I should focus more on the arrows and this idea of the degree show representing progression, moving on and going off in a different direction.

I came up with 3 phrases - Moving Up, Moving Forward, Moving On, which in thought emphasised how the students graduating form LAU will be going off in a multitude of different directions, with ‘Moving Up’ suggesting success in their future.

Inspired by the more intricate application off smaller modules on the the Large Scale sign, the A0 posters were developed with more arrows, evoking different paths and directions, which is even more emphasised by having a set of 2 different variants of the poster.

The a6 flyer design was largely unchanged, except for adding in some more arrows.

The editorial advertisements were updated similarly to the posters, however with slightly less intricate shapes, because this suited the smaller scale of the format better.

For the poster zine catalogue, the cover and poster were updated to match the flyer and editorial ad designs, but the biggest change was on the other side with all the information on; here, the modules of the layout have had colours applied to them and a few arrows running parallel and adjacent, within the module grid. I concern with this idea was that perhaps these bright colours and intersecting shapes would make the text slightly less readable.

The sign and way finding were both un changed because they both already heavily featured the arrows, and finally ,the Instagram ads were changed to feature an arrow instead of a circle.

At this point I was finished with the second round of development and ready to submit this idea. In general I was pleased with the result; I think the quick change of the concept, emphasising the arrows and this idea of new directions was definitely a lot more applicable to a degree show, and the updated designs with more arrows and boxes just looked a lot more well crafted and modular. However the one concern I had was that whoever was judging these would think that my campaign was too bright in colour. I think in my opinion, I picked those colours because I believed that the campaign does need to be really bold, and does need to stand out, however maybe these colours could have been applied in a more sophisticated and refined way. Thinking of Regular Practise’s design for the RCA’s degree show, the calligraphic symbol that they made was very bright in colour, but it was displayed on a white background often so it wasn’t too overbearing.
