Science Fiction - What does Graphic Design look like on Mars 3020?

In creating a graphic design product from mars in 3020, a future science fiction artefact, I really have to ask myself (or at least speculate) what design looks like at this point.

Below is a selection of screenshots from various designer’s articles on ‘It’s Nice That’ when the keyword ‘futuristic’ is used to search the graphic design section.

‘Futuristic’ design is often sleek, technological, technical, elaborate, geometric, metallic, cold, fluid. I think the reason for this, is that one of the most fundamental things we can predict when looking into the future, is the development and advancement of technology, therefore people extrapolate this to visions of a future which is abundant with advanced technology, and this metallic, cold, efficient and technical aesthetic is a product of that.

However, if we’re assuming that in the future, humans will be on mars, how might this affect graphic design, and the way it is produced?

  • Technology - No doubt technology will be inconceivably more advanced 1000 years in the future seeing as it was advanced enough to get us to mars.
  • Materials - With a lack of materials on Mars and every material that is there being used as efficiently as possible, its very conceivable to assume that maybe physical methods of visual communication won’t be viable, at least to begin with. Would this bring on a period of entirely digital art and design?
  • Environment/Atmosphere - With a severely harsh environment, temperature and atmosphere that would kill any human without a protective suit, it’s conceivable that a lot of communication will be wireless and digital, maybe people would lead a more house bound life since leaving the house would be risker or just more effort. Again suggesting a more digitally lead era of design.
  • Autonomous? - With robots being the ones prepping the mars base for the first astronauts to arrive in the future mission to mars, maybe in 1000 years will see a higher utilisation of artificial intelligence meaning maybe graphic design can be created instantly? Whether it can or not, there will still be humans who want to create, but maybe even then,  design software will be considerably more advanced.
  • Landscape - with a vastly different landscape, any depiction of nature or of the planet we live on would obviously be very different. Nature is a big inspiration in art, but living on mars would there even be any nature? Or would there be, just not in the form that we consider to be nature.

Moving to Mars Exhibition Book - Studio Julia

I like the design for the book for the moving to mars exhibit, designed by European design studio ‘studio Julia’. Its incredibly evocative of mars, with a red dusty terrain for the backgrounds and a bold geometric and modern sans serif font utilised rationally. Obviously this doesn’t reflect what graphic design would be like in 1000 years on Mars, but it reflects a concise and effective way of visually communicating Mars as we know it now.
