Science Fiction - Research Exercise - Design in the Future
In the early stages of thinking about what product I could create for this project, I was thinking about how I would like to focus on how everyday graphic design or products would look in a science fiction future. So to explore this idea further, I’m going to come up with a list of graphic design products or items and then another list of different science fiction futures and use a random generator to pair 2 of them together and then consider what this product might look like in this future e.g. how would the design of a social media app look in a future where humans live on both mars and earth; how could the ui/ux reflect communication between humans on these planets? how would posts from different planets be differentiated?
Design Platforms/Products
- Social Media App
- Record Sleeve and Packaging
- Editorial Magazine
- Fast Food Chain Advertising Campaign
- Exhibition Branding and Curation
- Hotel Brand Identity
- Editorial Design for a Cookbook
- Wall Hanging Design/Illustration
- Newspaper Design
- Decorative Typeface design
Science Fiction Futures
- Humans have colonised Mars
- Androids and Robots are sentient and live among humans
- Earth has made contact with intelligent alien civilisations
- Humans can travel to the moon and have holidays there
- Mobile phones have been replaced by chips implanted into the human brain
- Advancements in technology have made it possible to completely pick and change the genetic traits of babies being born.
- Time Travel has been discovered
Wall Hanging Design/Illustration - Humans can travel to the moon and have holidays there
A wall hanging is essentially decorative and pattern/picture based. I think with this paring there wouldn’t be massive changes, simply because a wall hanging doesn’t have any social/political/cultural elements to it. Maybe its a wall hanging which is on the moon, in a hotel or resort where people go to have holidays there. In which case maybe it it depicts scenes from the earth and very natural things to remind people of home, sort of like the gloves imbued with with an earth smell that I saw in the Moving to Mars exhibit. Maybe its a wall hanging on earth and it has imagery illustrations related to the moon as a reminder of a holiday there.
Record sleeve/packaging - Humans have colonised mars
This is an interesting idea when considering packaging and materials. If humans have colonised mars, maybe certain materials are more or less readily available. There are plans to create a ecological hydroponic farm however maybe there won’t be enough trees for paper to be a viable non essential resource.
A lot of the furniture in the living quarters of the mars mission will be 3D printed once the astronauts have arrived, maybe record sleeves ,cd cases and actual physical music formats would be 3D printed? I think the most likely option is that music would be entirely digital with no physical formats, perhaps this would mean a fully realised concept for the design of music for an entirely digital platform. How would the design be affected? Well it would reflect life on mars as opposed to life on earth; if you consider album covers that are photographic, these would be photographs on mars as opposed to earth etc.
Hotel Brand Identity - Earth has made contact with intelligent alien civilisations
I think with a lot of these combinations, they can only be very speculative, for example with this one, the question is, to what degree have humans made contact with aliens, has it been a simple singular interaction? Or is it something larger and more integrated? If the latter is the case, maybe this hotel brand identity would have to consider how it could appeal to aliens living on earth, maybe if we did make contact with aliens, this would create a massive cultural buzz around aliens. Design wise, this could maybe mean the integration of an alien language/alphabet within visual design.
Newspaper Design - Mobile phones have been replaced by chips implanted into the human brain
This is interesting because its this idea that humans will literally just be able to see applications, messages, whatever you would normally see on your phone etc. in their mind or in a sort of Heads up display over their vision. People look at the news on their phone a lot, and the UI/UX is clearly designed by whichever app they use, be it BBC News or the Apple News app. Maybe if technology was this advanced, everything would be completely customisable, however its also likely that the way a news app would be seen with this technology would be a UI/UX created and adapted for this technology.
