Science Fiction - Research Direction and Creating a Brief

I’ve done a fair amount of broad research, focusing in on mars as a key topic as a result of seeing the ‘Moving to Mars’ exhibit. Now I need to focus in on what I will be designing and do more in depth and specific research to inform that.

I really don’t want to lose the fact that this is a science fiction research project and not a mars research project, a lot of facts and research about the mars missions could inform a really interesting outcome, and they have certainly been a valuable research point, however to make this truly a science fiction project, I want create something, an item or a product, that it in itself, will be a work of science fiction. To do this I need to extrapolate an aspect of technology or social tendency related to mars or colonising mars, and then speculate what particular item or product might exist in this future, as a result of this extrapolation. Like Syd Mead’s concept art for Blade Runner, which depicted a semi-familiar yet futuristic look at Los Angeles, I think this outcome will be most effective if it is a product or item that we use now. If its something that people are familiar with now in this day and age, however the intrigue comes in the futuristic/sci-fi aspect of it; how has this extrapolated mars future changed what this product/object is, how it functions or what it looks like?

An interesting way to approach this could be to create something that is a consumer or cultural product, this isn’t an aspect that one considers too much when considering living on mars, you think about what you would live in, what the technology would be, what the microgravity would be like, what the scenery would be like. However if I’m speculating a future were many or even all humans live on mars, clearly there will be forms of entertainment, pop culture and consumer products. 

Design Brief - Create a product or object that exists in the year 3020, when all humans now live on Mars, and have done for centuries. Technologically, the human or ‘martian’ civilisation may be advanced, however how has Mars’ atmosphere, microgravity, climate and various other factors, affected the development of the human race on mars? Speculate what this science fiction future may look like, and visually investigate how this product reflects this future.

Connan Mockasin - Research and Facts

Mockasin commonly plays with a Fender Stratocaster which he has modified by cutting off the top sides to create a uniquely shaped guitar. At the time of the release of his second album Caramel, Mockasin stated that he had rarely listened to any music at all for the past ten years, giving him space to focus on his own sound.  Connan Mockasin’s real name is Connan Hosford, originally when he arrived in the UK it was with his band ‘Connan and the Mockasin’s’ a name he chose because of his skills at making Mockasin shoes out of dirt bike tyres and sheep skin. Rimowa - Pitch and Feedback

Rimowa -  It was really interesting for Commission to go through the presentation that they used to pitch for the Rimowa re-brand. Straight off the bat, one of the most interesting aspects was seeing the differences in their initial concepts, and the finished result, Chris addressed this by highlighting that when you’re pitching for a project and you win, that doesn’t mean that your designs will be applied as they are in the pitch, it means that you’ve won the opportunity to further work on it, and in Commission’s case, the project ended up developing in a few ways, a lot of this down to the CEO’s vision for the identity.   What also really struck me was how incredibly refined and thorough Commission’s presentation was, they created so many different aspects of collateral for the brand, and each was meticulously produced and photographed.
