Science Fiction - Fired on Mars

Fired on mars is a short animated film made by Nick Vokey and Nate Sherman. It tells the story of a man being being fired from his job in an office on mars which has a very small colony.

‘Sardonic short animation Fired on Mars imagines extraterrestrial colonisation as listless corporate dystopia’

What’s really interesting about this film is that the plot and narrative doesn’t focus on Mars as setting at all, there is no spectacle or marvelling about this setting on the red planet, it focuses on the mundane and everyday. Whats also interesting is that the protagonist is shown to be a graphic designer before he gets fired from his job, designing a sign for a toilet door. Ultimately his job is said to be unnecessary, however I think this is more for comedic effect and satire more than an actual reflection of the necessity for design on mars. Ultimately though its interesting to consider an everyday design job on Mars. The simple and contemporary illustration style is also really effective, depicting mars as it often is in popular culture, with red skies and burnt orange sandy landscapes.
