PPP - Intern - Regular Practise Live Interview - Website/Personal Branding Research

I watched the instagram live video of Regular Practise design studio talking to Intern Magazine about advice for design students during the current period of time. There were some really useful tips and advice that were talked about:

  • Printers are still open - Like many people, I assumed that printing services would be closed during this period, and that I wouldn’t be able to print and photograph the work that I’m making for extended practise that I want to put in my portfolio. As it turns out, printing services are still available, which means I can still utilise these services. One of the sites that was suggested was ‘YouLovePrint.com' which after checking it out, looks like a really good site for getting professionally printed publications, posters and more at a fairly reasonable cost.
  • No one is expecting you to go above and beyond right now - A lot of people have been talking about things that design students should be doing right now to utilise their time as efficiently as possible so that when this period of isolation ends, they’ve learnt a new skill or refined their practise. I do think this is a good idea, however it was reassuring to hear from someone in the design industry that this is no way expected. Right now I want to focus on finishing all my uni work for submission, however after that, it would be good to maybe do a self lead project if quarantine rules are still in place so that I can be more productive and have some more work for my portfolio.
  • Picking the right job/studio for you - It was interesting to hear this topic being discussed. People have an idea of what sort of studio they want to work at, be it a larger more commercial studio or a smaller studio that works on smaller scale briefs. A good piece of advice is that while it is good to work somewhere that you can see yourself enjoying, sometimes you can be too picky because realistically you don’t know what sort of studio you’ll enjoy working at until you start working there.

I looked at Regular Practises website after the talk and I really the simplicity of it, they’ve got some great shots of their work and the highly minimal site design allows these images of the work to shine through. Theres also a minimal approach to self branding which I think works as well. Although it’s good to communicate your personality and style, with a simpler approach, these design decisions don’t visually conflict with the work that you’re displaying on your site.

I’ve looked at a lot of more minimal design websites and I think that looking at Regular Practise’s has definitely made me think that it could be a good direction.
