Improper - Research - Forming a Visual Language
I liked the research into vintage playboy covers because contextually I think it would be a good reference, taking what’s stereotypically considered sexy and subverting or convoluting it. However visually, there’s wasn’t much I could take from them in terms of visual research. I looked at other examples of vintage pornography magazine covers which were much more promising. The cover design of them have various visual components used to display typography on a page which are quite cliched now because they’re outdated, these include the spiked text bubbles and a 45 degree banner on the side. These would be good visual devices to appropriate and utilise in a different way, almost like a parody. I also edited the logotype a bit more, deceasing the kerning and tightening it up, this is because it was very wide before, so when displayed at the top or bottom of the page, it couldn’t be shown at a particularly large scale.
