Improper - initial ideas document

I really like this idea of the two contrasting fonts reprinting masculinity and femininity. I played around with a lot of different options and the top one is my personal favourite. Some of the more intricate script fonts are nice but because they are so thin they won’t be as readable on different scales.

This logo is made up of ‘Obviously Wide Semi-bold Italic’ and Alpine Script Regular. Both fonts are free on Adobe Typekit so if you have an Adobe subscription you can download them and use them commercially. The ‘Obviously’ typeface has a huge number of varying widths and weights, so when being used in the poster and zine, you can attain a lot of variation with the typography, whilst still retaining the continuity of it being within the same typeface.

For the colour scheme, I was inspired by the masculine/feminine contrast of the logo. Blue and Pink are stereotypically associated with the male and female genders, however I know you didn’t want any colours used which have any gender associations, so I picked green and orange, which are the two opposite colours of pink and blue.

These are the exact colour hues that I’ve initially picked out. Obviously these can be changed or altered, however I thought the 2 orange colours matched the bold bright aesthetic of the images on your mood-boards, whilst the darker green tone offers a bit more contrast.

In order to demonstrate how these colours and type work within this visual identity, I did some rough mockups of what the cover could look like. Obviously the copy will be different but it gives you a bit of a feel for it. I think personally that the cover would look good if it used one of the photos that you’ll be adding in.

Similarly I did some quick mock-ups of what the editorial design could look like with this visual identity. Obviously again had to add in random images and text as placeholders, but I think it works quite well. Will you be doing the majority of the editorial design for the zine?
