Improper - Brief and Thoughts

Ella studies at London College of Fashion, and will be hooding a series of talks in the summer, producing a zine called ‘Improper’ which will run along side it.

‘The topic is to redefine “sexy” through inclusive and diverse imagery, which supports the conversations that are being opened up in the event series.’

Being fairly last minute, the deliverables for this brief may vary depending on time and which direction the project takes. As it stands the deliverables are a poster for the event, branding and logotype for the event and a front cover for the zine. The project has been labelled as a ‘collaboration’ because Ella will be doing work on the zine which I will also be working on.

The style of design that Ella is looking for is quite clear thanks to the mood boards she’s included in the brief presentation. She wants to combine ‘masculine’ and ‘feminine’ looking fonts for the logotype and she wants to steer away from pinks/reds/purples because of their stereotypical connotations about gender. She wants the poster to be bold and attention grabbing, bright and textural and she wants the cover of the zine to be inspired by vintage ‘tart’ cards.

I think these design decisions that she’s already made all in all look like they’ll make up a good project. Now it’s my responsibility to do some research and form some initial ideas based upon what she’s decided. It would be easy to do some designs right off the bat, but I want to make sure that all design decisions are researched and justified, and if that takes me in a slightly different direction, I’ll try and justify that with her, and meet in the middle. To that degree its almost like a client project because she has something she wants designed and has any existing idea of what it’ll look like and my job is to design it, however possibly the collaboration aspect will come in later with the zine. It’ll be interesting to undertake an external collaboration were I cant actually talk in person with who I’m doing the project with.
