East Village Dive Bar Research
Having researched dive bars, we found that actually the vast majority of them are very vibrant, with cluttered walls, lots of lights/neon lights and loads of stickers and things like that stuck on the wall. Clearly this doesn’t really match the tone of the minimal dark visual identity that we have done so far. If you look inside east village its also quite vibrant inside.
The definition of a dive bar is - “drinking den” or “other disreputable place of resort”, most dive bars aren’t nice sophisticated cocktail bars, east village itself isn’t incredibly sophisticated and is fairly casual.
Neon lights are also a really big thing in dive bars, featuring in the windows of 95% of the pictures I’ve seen of dive bars. I got a book on dive bars for a bit of visual research, here are some of the most common visuals/shapes within neon lights that we could possibly reference.
- arrows - pointing to entrance of establishments
- beer brands
- ‘… bar’ - you often see the word bar written in that specific neon font
- Perspective - you often see skewed or warped versions of the neon signs based on the perspective you look at them at.
