Voyage Magazine - Research
"Sali e Tabacchi, a new publication from London-based journalist Elisa Carassai and graphic designer Leonardo Pellegrino, is inspired by their homeland of Italy. A beautifully-designed journal which gives images ample room to breathe and balances serif and sans serif type elegantly throughout, it “explores the relationship between the creative arts and Italy’s unknown rituals, habits and traditions.”
This magazine was a great point of research, the editorial design is bespoke and well crafted. The full bleed images prioritise the subject of the magazine, the photos, making the viewing experience very visceral. How can the editorial style of Voyage be influenced by the subject of the magazine - Yachts? It has such a consistent style as well, using similar type, layout and monochrome colours for a lot of the pages. This is good if the narrative and content throughout the whole magazine is more homogenous, however, if there are different articles, maybe a slight variation in the colour/style would be good as a means to visually distinguish and separate them.
A lot of the contextual research that I needed was readily available within the magazine when I was reading the articles. It seems clear that the people who write these articles and the people who are being interviewed are really passionate about boats and yachts. The boats have names often human names like ‘Rebecca’ so when they talk about these boats with such admiration, they are almost anthropomorphising them.
These yachts are incredibly well crafted and engineered, the process of the upkeep, maintenance and restoration sounds meticulous and refined, I think the editorial style of the magazine can reflect this rationality.
