PPP - Portfolio Critiques
This session were we had silent crits giving each other feedback on our portfolios. I was fairly confident about mine, having just updated it when applying for my placement and having got some feedback on my placement, and my trip to BBH from industry professionals. I was also very aware of the weak points of my portfolio which I am actively looking to amend as I add more. These weak points are mainly the fact that most of the images are digital mockups and not photos - I really want to start photographing outcomes of projects professionally which exponentially increases the quality of the portfolio.
Here are some useful points of feedback that I received:
- Photograph posters in context - This is what I stated above, about photographing products as opposed to using digital mockups. Even just printing posters and sticking them up in context to photograph them would be a nice idea to make my portfolio look more bespoke.
- Text is too small - Looking at my portfolio, the text is indeed kind of small, the readability of this had not occurred to me, but I will definitely take this into account and make it bigger.
- Abbey Sans page 3 - pattern is too bold - This had actually occurred to me so I will look at toning it down.
- Add contact info - I did have contact info on my portfolio before, however it was on a page with my cover letter on as well which was specific to my placement, therefore I removed that for this crit as I didn’t think it was necessary, however I do agree that having clear contact info in a portfolio is very important. Maybe even having it twice, once at the beginning and once at the end.
As well as getting feedback, it was really interesting to see other peoples portfolios and to give them feedback. Often on that feedback, people would ask about layout and I would say that having full page images works really well because its bolder and you can really see the work. I have done this with my portfolio recently and I think it works well.
