New Music Market Branding - Research & Ideas

Having settled on a logo design and started experimenting with wireframes for a digital mockup of the NMM application, I need to start designing a consistent visual identity for elements like the posters and digital adds. I want to continue the theme of contrasting the mundane supermarket design aesthetic with something a bit more contemporary, evocative of music and visually intriguing, in order to appeal to the younger target audience.

The Posters Need to:-

  • Advertise the album by advertising the product; I thought it would be interesting to push the boundaries of a normal poster promoting an album by making it look more like its advertising the product. This will probably entail showing the product fairly large within the composition.
  • Priorotise the album aesthetic  but not forget about the brand - if its the album which is being promoted, I want the visuals of the poster to be consistent with that however the visual identity of NMM should still be present in order to push the idea of it being the underlying brand.

Research:-

Tesco - Tesco’s advertisements are very minimal and communicate the product succinctly ; often with the product on a white background and the blue of their visual identity as a spot colour. The Tesco logo and their catchphrase will also always appear in the corner of the composition. I think this style of poster is instantly recognisable as a supermarket advertisement; I want to experiment with how I can reference this and perhaps gain that instant contact of it being a supermarket ad, yet still infuse it with stylistic design elements suitable to the album.

Laura Prim - In contrast, I looked at the work of Swiss graphic designer Laura Prim. She has recently done a set of posters for different events at the Rosenberg Kollektiv and what caught my eye was how they advertise different events, however they still retain a great amount of visual consistency. Colour, Layout and Shapes have been changed and it gives each poster a more individual feel, however when put together they work great as a set. Maybe when trying to retain the visual identity of NMM in these posters, I can make simpler changes like this to reference the style and genre of each album?
