Extended Practise Project 2 - Collaborative Branding Project

As an internal collaborative project, I decided to partner up with Jamie to do a branding based project. Branding is one of the areas of design we’re both interested in and I also really like the style of his work and some of thy projects he has done. We started thinking about what to do for the project, we considered a few ideas; something music based as that’s something we’re both interested in or a product like beer or coffee which we could really push the packaging design for. Ultimately we came to the conclusion that while its all well and good to pick some company or musician and rebrand it, actually it would be good to do something more locally based, that way we can experience it, gain more knowledge on it, and also get feedback back from the actual business/establishment.

With this in mind we have got to the point where we want to research bars, cafes, restaurants, coffee shops in the nearby area. With a location like this, we can produce touchpoints like a logo, promotional material, web branding or business cards but also designed elements that will actually go inside the business/shop - menus, posters, designs for glasses/mugs maybe even a design to go on the walls. We’re both keen to create a simple, effective and intuitive visual identity and stretch this over as many touchpoints as we can - demonstrating our capabilities to create astute and appropriate graphic elements and visual devices that work in a variety of contexts.

Location Ideas

Brudenell Social Club - Brudenell doesn’t have a particularly strong visual identity and has a range of different things that designed elements could be used for: the gig space, the pool room, its serves food etc. However I think part of the social clubs identity is the fact that it is a bit old and outdated, perhaps modernising it would discourage some of its older patrons from coming.

East Village - The East Village - New Wave Dive Bar is a small cocktail bar in central Hyde Park. It has an existing logo and menus designs however I think there could be room for improvement. Having spoken to the guy who runs it, he said they try not to advertise themselves too much as its a small venue and they don’t want it to get overcrowded with the wrong sort of people, perhaps this could inform the design process? Another interesting thing that could play into the design is a big diagram they have open the wall which indicates the flavours of all their cocktails. This could be interesting to re-design along with the menus.
