Extended Practise Project 1 - Publication
For my first extended practice project I want to do an individual publication project. Whilst leaning towards branding and visual identity as the areas of design I favour and potentially would like to go into, I still really enjoy editorial and publication design and would like the opportunity to take everything I have learn about it throughout university and create a very developed publication.
I personally think some of the most engaging publications and zines that I have seen are those that focus on one specific idea/object/thing and go into great detail about it. As a reader, its interesting to look through publications like this and learn about something that perhaps you have never considered or thought about in great depth. Thinking about the nature of the content, it could be informative, purely visual, it could catalogue a variety of things, it could document a specific process/journey or maybe it could be more collaborative. Whilst it will still be an independent project, perhaps I could interview people; I think this is an engaging idea because it gives a variety of different perspectives and views on the same thing.
Luck - I thought of basing my publication around the concept of luck. Luck is something that everyone has thought about and formed their own opinion on, whether you consider yourself a lucky/unlucky person, you have certain superstitions e.g. stepping on 3 drains is bad luck, you are very rational and don’t believe in luck at all or maybe you have your own lucky charms - there’s such a variety of responses to luck as a singular concept. It has a wealth of folklore and superstitions associated with it which could be interesting to explore. It’s also intriguing to hear about luck in different cultures and religions; the number 13 is considered unlucky by us however it is a lucky number for the Chinese, buddhists don’t believe in luck, fate or chance and instead subscribe to the creed of every action having an equal action and reaction - karma.
Its definitely an intriguing concept, and to some degree, it might be good to keep the parameters of the brief fairly broad, that way my outcome can really be informed by my research and findings, almost like a research publication. In regards to what the content could take the form of, here are my initial ideas:
- Interviewing people about their opinions and thoughts on luck
- Informative and factual pages on interesting superstitions and objects/symbols that are considered lucky/unlucky
- Talk about luck in different cultures and beliefs.
