COP Design Project Ideas

Following on from the feedback from my presentation, I started to think about how I can develop the idea for my COP design project. The fundamental issue with my existing idea was that people don’t consume  music anymore, they don’t buy records, they stream and download music.

Problem: Artists don’t get as much money from streaming sites. Also perhaps the spontaneity of finding records in a shop and listening to them has vanished, people experiment with music less.

Solution?

The idea of creating objects is interesting I think, we did a similar thing at the end of first year when we created considered objects based upon the micro genre of music that we picked. Thinking about Caramel, by Connan Mockasin, the album I was originally going to redesign for my project, having done a fair amount of research on it, I can already think of ideas for objects based upon the album. An obvious one could be caramel sweets however I was also thinking about how he recorded the record in a Tokyo hotel room and that made me think of the small toiletries you get in hotel bathrooms. Maybe I could make caramel scented toiletries and design the labels. 

So while that is considered and based upon my research, how does it link to the issues I’ve identified? One idea I had was some sort of bespoke music merchandise service; instead of the same old t-shirts, posters and key chains, it could sell more luxury items which are based on individual albums. Maybe through doing so, hypothetically this service could give money back to the artists, solving the problem I identified. These objects could vary upon different albums and be individually rooted in research, or perhaps I could go more specific; maybe it sells one specific type of product, for example like I came up with for Caramel, it could sell toiletries(shampoos or soaps etc.). This would give me the opportunity to brand the visual identity of the service, as well as create a small range of products based upon different albums.

Connan Mockasin - Research and Facts

Mockasin commonly plays with a Fender Stratocaster which he has modified by cutting off the top sides to create a uniquely shaped guitar. At the time of the release of his second album Caramel, Mockasin stated that he had rarely listened to any music at all for the past ten years, giving him space to focus on his own sound.  Connan Mockasin’s real name is Connan Hosford, originally when he arrived in the UK it was with his band ‘Connan and the Mockasin’s’ a name he chose because of his skills at making Mockasin shoes out of dirt bike tyres and sheep skin. Rimowa - Pitch and Feedback

Rimowa -  It was really interesting for Commission to go through the presentation that they used to pitch for the Rimowa re-brand. Straight off the bat, one of the most interesting aspects was seeing the differences in their initial concepts, and the finished result, Chris addressed this by highlighting that when you’re pitching for a project and you win, that doesn’t mean that your designs will be applied as they are in the pitch, it means that you’ve won the opportunity to further work on it, and in Commission’s case, the project ended up developing in a few ways, a lot of this down to the CEO’s vision for the identity.   What also really struck me was how incredibly refined and thorough Commission’s presentation was, they created so many different aspects of collateral for the brand, and each was meticulously produced and photographed.
